Caracol Radio was born in Medellín in 1948 with the name Cadena Radial Colombiana S.A. and today is one of the most important stations in Colombia. In 1956 Caracol Radio owned and operated four stations: La Voz de Antioquia (currently Radio Reloj Medellín), La Voz del Río Cauca (currently Caracol Cali, HJED), Emisoras Nuevo Mundo and Radio Reloj.

Between 1958 and 1963, Caracol Radio acquired a total of 9 radio stations and absorbed small networks as Cadena Radial Andina and Sociedad Nacional de Radiodifusión. In 1967 Caracol TV was spun off from Caracol Radio. In 1986 Caracol radio rented the stations of the Núcleo Radial Bienvenida and in the same year, a Colombian business man named Julio Domingo, acquired 50% of both Caracol Radio and of Caracol TV, with 25% each belonging to Alfonso López Michelsen and the family of Fernando Londoño Henao. In 2004 due to financial problems Caracol Radio was sold to Prisa.

Caracol Radio main competitors are RCN Radio, Blu Radio and Todelar. Caracol Radio is broadcasted all over Colombia with local news reports for each region and it even has a sister network in Miami named Caracol 1260 AM, WSUA, which is the number one Spanish language talk station in this city, according to Grupo Latino de Radio (US subsidiary of PRISA Radio).
